Hassan taken on remand again
Dhaka, June 24 (bdnews24.com) ? Hassan Syed, the husband of tortured Dhaka University teacher Rumana Monzur, has been put on a one-day remand.
Dhaka's metropolitan magistrate Utpal Chowdhury on Friday granted the Detective Branch (DB) to remand him again when he was produced before it for hearing.
Bahauddin Faruqi, a DB sub-inspector and the investigation officer, sought 10 days for questioning him in the attempt-to-murder case, filed by the victim's father on June 6.
Hassan's lawyer Bipul Debnath submitted a bail petition, which was turned down by the court.
Earlier, Hassan, 38, was remanded thrice for a total of five days.
Absconding since June 5, Hassan was arrested on June 15 after he allegedly tried to gouge his wife's eyes out and chewed part of her nose off.
Assistant professor of international relations of Dhaka University, Rumana was taken to Chennai, India for better treatment on June 14, as doctors said the tissues of the victim's eyes had got badly ruptured in the attack.
Indian doctors told Rumana she had lost both her eyes.
After arrest, Hassan claimed she had an affair with an Iranian, whom she had met while studying in Canada.
Rumana is now under treatment at the capital's Lab Aid Hospital.
