Maldives wants direct link with Ctg port
Dhaka, July 14 (bdnews24.com)?The Maldives wants to have direct shipping link between Chittagong and Hithadhoo ports to import more from Bangladesh.
The construction sector is booming in the Maldives and it is possible to import construction materials, including river sand, iron and metal bar, visiting state minister and chairman of Hithadhoo port of the Maldives Abdulla Shahid said on Wednesday.
He was speaking at a discussion arranged by the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) in the city.
"I had a discussion with the Bangladesh commerce minister to export more from Bangladesh at a reasonable price. Direct shipping link can help boost Bangladeshi exports to our country," he said.
The link is possible only when the ships, sailed for the Maldives, will have enough consignments to recover the costs, he added.
"I will discuss with some shipping companies today to explore the ways to set up the link."
FBCCI president AK Azad said both the governments might take initiative to establish direct air-link to facilitate people-to-people contact and tourism.
The Maldives ambassador to Dhaka Ahmed Sareer said 60,000 Bangladeshis are working in his country and they may recruit more professionals from Bangladesh.

Shahara wants more cops in suburbs
Dhaka, July 10 (bdnews24.com) ?The home minister has ordered an increase in the number of policemen at the district level.
Her order came following a remark from the inspector general that law enforcers fall victims to picketers in suburban areas.
Shahara Khatun visited Square Hospital to see additional superintendent of police Saidur Rahman who was injured in a clash with hartal supporters at Fatullah on Sunday.
Twelve parties, mostly Islamist, enforced a 30-hour countrywide lockdown, to push for restoration of 'Absolute Faith and Trust in Allah' in and dropping of secularism from the constitution.
Inspector general Hasan Mahmud Khandaker told Shahara after the visit that picketers were concentrating on suburban areas and policemen were getting outnumbered and beaten up.
Shahara instructed him to increase the number of policemen in those areas.
"We also observed hartal. We used to get beaten up by the police. But now the picketers attack the police with large canes," she said.
She also praised the police for their patience during the Fatullah clash.
Asked about civilians seen aiding the police in battling the picketers, she said, "People do not support hartal. So they resisted it."

EU wants fair, inclusive polls
Dhaka, June 23 (bdnews24.com) ? The European Union wants to see a free, fair and inclusive general election in Bangladesh scheduled for 2014.
EU commissioner for development Andris Peibalgs expressed the regional grouping's expectation at a press briefing in the city on Thursday.
On the present political row over the caretaker government, he said: "The political parties have an obligation to resolve their dispute? They shouldn't do politics for blockade, rather they should do it for the people."
Peibalgs said the EU would not take any position in the country's political row. "Rather we want constructive talks [between the ruling and opposition parties]," he added.
The ruling Awami League and opposition BNP have stood face to face over retaining the provision of non-party caretaker government system for the next general elections.
BNP already enforced a spell of general strike protesting the government's move to scrap the system.
About foreign aid, he said member countries of the union would not cut down assistance to Bangladesh.
"But from our side the demand is effective and efficient use of our fund and good result at the end of project?We demand quality of works," he added.
Mentioning that 52 percent of Bangladesh's export goes to the EU countries, Peibalgs said: "We're happy that we're creating employment in Bangladesh."
The EU commission came to Dhaka on June 20 in a joint visit with German minister for economic cooperation and development Dirk Niebel, who also addressed the Thursday briefing.
Niebel said politicians are obliged to find out ways to resolve their disputes and he is confident that they could do it.
He said those who are in the opposition might form the next government.
MEETING WITH OPPOSITION LEADER
Earlier in the day, a nine-member delegation led by Peibalgs and Niebel met BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Party vice-president Shamser Mobin Chowdhury quoted her as telling the delegation that the next general election would not be free and fair if held under a political government.
"People won't accept that election," Khaleda told them.
The delegation also spoke of Bangladesh's current political situation, way to strengthen democratic system, ensuring rights to vote and economic development.

HC wants investors' money back from Unipay2U
The High Court (HC) has issued a rule upon the government asking why it should not be directed to arrange to pay back the money of the 22 investors in Unipay2U Bangladesh, a multi-level marketing (MLM) company, reports bdnews24.com.
The bench of justices Mohammad Bazlur Rahman and M Enayetur Rahim issued the rule Tuesday in response to a writ petition filed by the investors.
The finance secretary, the governor and a deputy general manager of Bangladesh Bank and the managing director of Unipay2U have been asked to respond to it within three weeks.
Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and advocate Mohammad Nazmul Huda argued for the petitioners during the hearing.
Twenty-two investors in Chittagong filed the petition on May 13 last year to get back the money that they had invested in Unipay2U.
The government last year initiated moves to control multi-level marketing business on getting allegations that many such companies were cheating the people tempting them of high profit.
The central bank on Jan 9 warned the people against investing in multilevel marketing companies that offer abnormal profits in a short span of time.
It said the investors can be deceived by the companies that come up with schemes offering 10 per cent or more profits a month upon investments in gold markets abroad or foreign exchanges.
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed cases against several companies and the central bank stopped operation of their accounts.
In March, the commerce minister told parliament there were 62 registered MLM companies operating in the country.
He said the government knew the number of clients of only one of them, Destiny-2000, which is around 4.5 million.

Dhaka, June 22 (bdnews24.com) ? After seeing the fate ('porinati') of the Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) and stocks scam probe committee chief Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled, no well-meaning man will ever speak against corruption, head of a top trade body has said.
"The TIB has landed in trouble after publishing a report. They have to run ('douradouri') around the High Court now," Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) president A K Azad said on Wednesday.
"After speaking against corruption, Ibrahim Khaled is in danger, too. No good man in this country will speak against corruption," he added.
Azad was speaking at a workshop, 'End to corruption and complexities to get environmental permission, and industrialisation' at a city hotel.
According to him, one month is enough to remove corruption if minister and secretary level officials want to. "But a system to keep a tab on them should also be there."
"End to corruption is not possible without removing political corruption from the country. It is seen that politicians face corruption cases when the government changes," he added.
The FBCCI president urged businessmen and members of the civil society to get united against 'political corruption'.
Chaired by International Business Forum of Bangladesh (IBFB) president Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury, director general of the Department of Environment (DoE) Monowarul Islam, IBFB media public relation and communication officer Jesmina Shanta, among others, were also present at the workshop.

JP lawmaker wants 'filter' for judges
Dhaka, June 19 (bdnews24.com) ? Appointment of partisan judges in the higher courts creates instability in the judiciary.
Jatiya Party lawmaker Mojibul Haq in his budget discussion Sunday said there should be a system to appoint impartial and efficient judges in the higher courts.
"I have seen the partisan appointments in the regime of all governments but it creates problems," he said.
He was of the view that there should be laws to ban hartal.
About warrants of precedence, he said public representatives should not be categories lower than that of public servants.
"Cabinet and principal secretaries have higher ranks than that of lawmakers in the warrants of precedence and it should be amended," he pointed out.
H N Asiqur Rahman said inequality between rural and urban areas was increasing.
"The prospect of a person from rural area is not the same as of an urban person," he said.
Asaduzzaman Khan proposed to increase the tax-free income to Tk 0.25 million from Tk 0.18 million.
State minister for environment and forests Hasan Mahmud came down heavily on the national committee on protection of oil, gas, mineral resources.
"Who gave Monu (Anu) Mohammad the mandate to protect the national interest," he asked.
"He is a professor of economics. What he knows about mineral resources," he said.
"How the committee becomes a national one which is comprised of street urchins?"
"They want to stab the country and work on behalf of foreign patrons," he added.
"Some like to come to highlight by urinating on the head of people, while there are many who want to be highlighted by urinating on the country," Hasan said.
Mojibul Haq was in the chair when Hasan made the speech and the speaker gave him thanks for his wise and knowledgeable speech.
Lawmakers Afsarul Amin, Shawkat Ara Begum, Mohammad Abdul Hai, Giasuddin Ahmed, Mohammad Moslemuddin, Narayan Chandra Chanda, AKM Rahmatullah, Monowar Hossain Chowdhury, Mir Showkat Ali Badsha and Mohammad Shah Alam also spoke.
