DUKE BAILSC summons 2nd charge-sheet

Dhaka, July 14 (bdnews24.com) ? The Supreme Court has called for the supplementary charge-sheet filed in the August 21 grenade attack case by July 21.

An eight-strong bench headed by chief justice Mohammad Muzammel Hossain on Thursday issued the order during the hearing on a government petition seeking cancellation of the bail of Saiful Islam Duke, an accused in the case.

The new charge-sheet was filed on July 3 against 30 more accused, including BNP chief Khaleda Zia's son Tarique Rahman and nephew Duke. With the naming of new faces, the number of charge-sheeted accused in the case has reached 52.

Duke secured bail from the High Court on May 4 after he was shown arrested in the case. But as the state appealed against the order, the chamber judge put a stay order and sent the petition for hearing to the full bench.

Duke's lawyer Khandker Mahbub Hossain argued that his client could be granted bail as the charges against him before and after the supplementary charge-sheet was filed were same.

Attorney general Mahbubey Alam argued the bail could not be retained as he was named in the new charge-sheet. The bail was granted before the supplementary charge-sheet was submitted.

The grisly grenade attack on an Awami League meeting at Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka on Aug 21, 2004 had left 24 people, including incumbent president Zillur Rahman's wife Ivy Rahman, dead and 73 injured.

Supplementary charge-sheet submitted

Habiganj, June 20 (bdnews24.com)?A supplementary charge-sheet has been submitted in the Shah A M S Kibria murder case against 14 people, including ex-BNP state minister Lutfozzaman Babar.

The charge-sheet was submitted to Habiganj Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court around 10:30am on completion of further investigation, CID senior ASP and investigation officer Mohammad Rafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com.

He said the hearing on the charge-sheet would be held on June 24 at Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal.

Former finance minister Kibria and four others were killed in a grenade attack in Habiganj on Jan 27, 2005. Over 70 people were also injured in the gruesome attack.

Abdul Majid Khan, then the general secretary of Awami League's district unit and currently an MP, filed two cases over the incident.

On Mar 10, 2005, then senior ASP of CID Munshi Atiqur Rahman submitted a charge sheet naming 10 people.

The High Court ordered further investigation into the murder case when the caretaker government was in office.

Babar, currently serving 17 years behind bars in an arms case, was also shown arrested in connection with the Aug 21, 2004 grenade attack on an Awami League rally when he was the junior minister.

The case had been languishing for three years when it was taken up for further investigation as per directives of the High Court to find out the mastermind behind the grenade attack. Six accused are now detained in jail, including HuJI leader Mufti Hannan.
