Read more...Dhaka, July 14 (bdnews24.com) ? Now on, rice carrying trucks moving across the country will be provided with police escorts to evade hijacking, the home minister.
The move follows a strike of Naogaon Truck Owners-Workers Association demanding security.
"The carrier trucks will also move in convoys on highways," Shahara Khatun told reporters on Thursday evening after a meeting at the ministry on prevention of truck hijacking.
"The number of highway police patrol will also be increased," she said.
The minister also said that Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has been ordered to take initiative to install Global Positioning System (GPS) tracker on the trucks carrying rice or other valuables like steel rod or readymade garment products.
On July 7, a coordination council of the Naogaon Truck Owners-Workers Associations had started the strike to protest frequent hijacking of trucks.
Pointing out that most of the rice is taken to various parts of the country in trucks from Naogaon, she said, "Whenever the convoy would enter a district, the district police department will take over the convoy's responsibility."
Food minister Abdur Razzaque, shipping minister Shahjahan Khan, Naogaon Truck Owners-Workers Association leaders and law enforcement agency officials attended the meeting.
NAOGAON STRIKE WITHDRAWN
Naogaon Truck Owners-Workers Association president Mohammad Ilias Reza Tuhin said following the government move, the association had called off their strike.
Tuhin, also the truck owners-workers coordination council convenor, told bdnews24.com that at least 58 trucks were hijacked and nine drivers and helpers killed over the last 10 years.
"Many businessmen had to quit as they faced bankruptcy," he said.

Dhaka, July 10 (bdnews24.com)?Police have continued their clampdown on the activists of 12 parties, mostly Islamist who are enforcing a 30-hour countrywide lockdown.
Two of the 12 parties claimed that police arrested over 550 of their supporters around the country since the beginning of the hartal at 6am on Sunday.
Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB), which at the last moment backed away from the alliance of the 12 parties, alone claimed that over 500 of its activists have been arrested while Khelafat-e-Majlish put their figure at 50.
The shutdown is being enforced to push for restoration of 'Absolute Faith and Trust in Allah' in and dropping of secularism from the constitution.
The other parties are Sammilita Olama Mashayekh Parishad, National Democratic Party, Islami Oikya Andolon, Bangladesh Muslim League, Bangladesh NAP, NAP Bhasani, Jatiya Ganatantrik Party, Islamic Party and Nezam-e- Islami Party.
Opposition BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami extended their support to the general strike.
The IAB office at Purana Paltan was cordoned off by police since morning, who also obstructed its supporters on several occasions from parading down the streets.
The bdnews24.com correspondent reported from the spot that whenever the IAB supporters were trying to come out, they were facing arrest.
Lawmen obstructed IAB processions at many parts of the city and elsewhere in the country, party leaders said.
IAB publicity secretary Ahmad Abdul Qaiyum claimed that police had arrested over 500 of its supporters from across the country since morning.
Police earlier on Saturday had detained 56 of their activists, he added.
The outfit's Dhaka city unit chief A T M Hemayetuddin alleged that they were barred to exercise their democratic right. "The police role proves that the country is ruled by an autocratic government. But our movement will continue," he told bdnews24.com.
Meanwhile, pickets of Khlefat-e-Majlish were not seen on the streets after 10 people, including its secretary-general Nezam Uddin, were arrested in the early hours of the hartal.
Police picked up 50 supporters of Khelafat from across the country as they tried to bring out processions in support of the hartal, its publicity secretary Jalal Uddin told bdnews24.com.
Although opposition BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, which had enforced a 48-hour countrywide general strike from 6am on Wednesday, extended their support to the blockade, they were not seen on the streets.
The BNP headquarters at Naya Paltan had been cordoned and locked by police since morning. Several hundred law enforcers were deployed there.
In Panchabati and Kanchpur of Narayanganj, over 50 people including 10 policemen were injured in clashes.
Apart from fighting pickets on the streets, reinforced lawmen kept offices of several parties in the city besieged since morning.
A good number of buses alongside CNG-driven auto-rickshaws were seen on the capital streets.
Even then, rickshaws dominated the streets like other hartal days.
Ten mobile courts are also in force in the city to hold summary trials.

Law enforcers cordoned the party office off on Sunday and did not let anyone enter or come out of it.
BNP and its ally Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami have extended their support to the hartal called by 12 Islamic parties, mostly Islamists, demanding that 'Absolute Faith and Trust on Allah' be reinstated in the constitution and secularism be dropped.
Several hundred policemen in riot gear were patrolling the area. They locked the main gate of the BNP office around 10am.
Other than a few office staff, there was no-one in the BNP central office.
'Rafique', an office assistant, said police did not allow anyone enter the office. "They [police] even told us not to get out of the office," he told bdnews24.com.

Agartala, July 11 (bdnews24.com)?At least 83 people, including 11 photojournalists, have been injured in baton charge on the Congress supporters by Tripura police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR).
The Congress supporters were on Sunday opposing the common entrance test (CET) of Tripura Medical College (TMC) demanding that 85 of the 100 seats should be filled up by students qualifying in the state joint entrance examination.
Police said the forces resorted to lathi charge as Congress workers tried to stop the examinees.
Forty-four of the injured, including three journalists, were treated at Agartala Government Medical College while 39 released after first aid.
Senior Congress leader and MLA Gopal Roy said police had resorted to baton charge on the Congress workers without any provocation.
The police, he alleged, had attacked the Congress protestors under pressure from the ruling Left Front chief minister Manik Sarkar.
The state police chief K Sail Ali had announced on Saturday that he was instructed to ensure that the examination was held peacefully.
Roy said 85 seats should be filled by students of Tripura, who are qualifying in JEE, as TMC is a government medical college and the rest 15 seats could be kept reserved for central pool.
Roy alleged that the state government, taking huge capitation money in the back door wanted to fill up 55 seats from JEE and 30 by those who qualify in the CET.
The director of health service in an affidavit said, "TMC is a government college to get the approval of Medical Council of India (MCI)."
Meantime, the media fraternity had protested against the attack on the photo and TV journalist.
Scribes sat in front of the police headquarters to protest against the police atrocity and demanded strict action against those police personnel who were involved in the attack on media people.
Jayanta Bhattacharjee, President of Agartala Press Club, condemning the incident said the media fraternity was united against the police atrocity and demanded judicial enquiry.
Later DGP Tripura Police K Salim Ali came out to express his sadness on the incident and gave assurance that he would do enquiry on the incident and take action against those found guilty.

"The days of the government are numbered. It'll collapse if the police stop backing it," he told a gathering of the party activists at its Lalbagh office on Friday.
Accusing the administration of regional partiality, Amini said, "Police officials from Gopalganj are promoted to vital posts."
"This government is not only against the country but also against Qur'an," he further alleged.
About himself, Amini said he had been under house arrest for the last two months.
