Read more...AMMAN, July 14 (Reuters): Syrian forces killed two people Thursday when they fired at a pro-democracy protest in the provincial capital of Deir al-Zor, residents said.
The incident was part of an escalating crackdown against dissent in the tribal region bordering Iraq's Sunni heartland.
Military Intelligence agents also injured seven protesters who had gathered in the main square of the city on the Euphrates river in the remote northeast.
A statue of President Bashar al-Assad's brother Basel had stood in the square but security forces removed it two months ago to stop demonstrators smashing it.
"A crowd of 1,500 had shown up for the usual noon demonstration despite the intense heat. Thousands more have descended on the square after the killings, and there are now around 10,000 people there," said one witness, a computer programer who declined to give his name for fear of arrest.
Despite being the centre of Syria's modest oil production, Deir al-Zor is among the poorest regions in the country of 20 million people.
Little oil revenue is invested in the desert area and water shortages over the last six years, which experts say have largely been caused by mismanagement of resources and corruption, have decimated agricultural production.
This has weakened support for the Assad family, which has ruled Syria with an iron fist since 1970, among Sunni tribes in Deir al-Zor, whom the authorities had allowed to carry arms as a counterweight to a Kurdish population further north.
Two overnight explosions hit minor gas pipelines in Deir al-Zor Wednesday, residents said. The official state news agency said a pipeline had caught fire due to dry weather or a leak.

KARACHI, July 14 (Reuters): Fresh political violence gripped Pakistan's commercial capital, Karachi, Thursday, leaving 14 people dead in fighting sparked by a senior ruling party leader's criticism of the city's dominant political group.
Angry mobs went on a rampage and burned vehicles after Zulfiqar Mirza, a minister in the Sindh provincial assembly and senior member of President Asif Ali Zardari's Pakistan People's Party (PPP), urged the people of Karachi and Hyderabad, the second-largest city of Sindh, to "stand up ... and rid yourselves" of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
"I appeal to the people of Karachi especially, and of Hyderabad, to stand up for yourselves, for Pakistan, for Karachi and for your innocent children, and rid yourselves of these cursed ones," he said while talking to reporters, referring to senior MQM leaders.
In comments broadcast repeatedly by local television stations, he also criticised Mohajirs -- the descendents of Urdu-speakers who migrated from India -- for being ungrateful for the home they were given after the creation of Pakistan in 1947.
Provincial home minister Manzoor Wasan said 14 people were killed and 25 wounded in violence since last night. At least one person was killed in Hyderabad, police said.
Several protests were held in Karachi and other cities of the province, where hundreds of angry protesters burned tires, chanted slogans against Mirza and burned his effigies, demanding his removal as a minister.
Many roads were closed in Karachi after protesters torched several vehicles following heavy firing all night in many areas.
Mirza later apologised for his comments.
"My statement last night was my personal view and was not meant to hurt anybody's sentiments. But if it has done that, I sincerely apologise," he said in a statement.
Karachi, home to more than 18 million people, has a long history of ethnic, religious and sectarian violence.
It was a major target of al Qaeda-linked militants after the September 11 2001 attacks on the United States, when Pakistan joined the US-led campaign against militancy.
The latest incidents come after a surge in ethnic and political violence in Karachi last week, which killed more than 100 people.
As the commercial hub, any upheaval in Karachi could disturb industrial activity and have serious consequences for the economy.
The country is struggling to control a rising Taliban insurgency in the northwest along the border with Afghanistan, while militant attacks in bigger cities are also on the rise.
The insurgency, perceptions of corruption and chronic power shortages have put off long-term investors, hurting the fragile economy which has been propped up by an $11 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout programme.

The violence came as thousands of protesters took to the streets across Syria after the weekly Muslim prayers calling for the fall of the autocratic regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
The demonstrations were in response to a call by the Facebook group Syrian Revolution 2011, one of the motors of the protests, under the banner, "Fall of legitimacy."
"Security forces tried to break up a rally calling for the fall of the regime with tear gas before opening fire" killing three people and injuring 25 others, an activist in the Damascus neighbourhood of Barzeh said, reached by telephone.
They also opened fire on demonstrators in the town of Kiswah south of Damascus, killing at least five people, another activist told AFP.
"Demonstrators left the mosque after Friday prayers and marched for a few minutes until security forces opened fire to disperse them, killing five people and wounding six others," rights activist Mohammad Enad Suleiman said.
Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, also reported "one death" in the central city of Homs.
Meanwhile the official SANA news agency reported that "several members of the security forces were hit by gunfire in Kiswah."
Fridays have been a focal point for protesters since the start of pro-democracy demonstrations in mid-March, with Syrians taking to the streets on the weekly day of rest after midday Muslim prayers.
Syrian rights groups say that more than 1,300 people have been killed and while 10,000 have been arrested in the regime's brutal crackdown against dissent since the protests-now in their fourth month-erupted.
The Facebook page said Friday's protests should send a strong message to Assad that he and his regime are no longer legitimate and must go.
"Bashar is no longer my president and his government no longer represents me," it said.

Gazipur: Four people, including three members of a family, were killed when a private car carrying them met a triangle accident at Tetuibari in Sadar upazila early Thursday.
The deceased were identified as Liton Khan, 45, his wife Eliza, 40, son Dipu, 8, and unidentified private car driver aged about 35. They all hailed from Ghatail upazila in Tangail.
Police said a truck while overtaking hit a bus and later the two vehicles hit another private car at the point, which was coming from opposite direction, leaving four dead on the spot at about 5:30am.
The bus and truck fell into roadside following the accident, which took place on Kaliakoir-Nabinagar road.
The private car was going to capital from Ghatail in Tangail.
Police later seized the bus and truck, but its drivers and helpers managed to escape.

Police said the incident took place early on Sunday at Char Daulat Kha village in the upazila that saw polls in 14 unions on Sunday.
The victim was identified as Mohabbat Ali Sarder, 60.
At least three people were killed in the upazila last month centering the local body elections.
Locals alleged the supporters of two chairman candidates -- Sarder Mohammad Abdul Mannan and Chan Mia Shikder -- set off a number of hand bombs from 10:30pm until the early hours of Sunday, spreading panic in the area.
Mannan's supporters tried to drive out the agents of their rival candidate from three centres, Kalkini Police Station officer in-charge A K M Shahin Mandal told bdnews24.com.
The body of Mohabbat was in the police station until filing of the report.
Additional police were deployed at the village to avoid further trouble, the police officer said.

The body of Jasmine Akhtar, 15, was recovered early on Monday from Flat-704 of a house at south Dholaipar under Shyampur Police Station, officer in-charge Mia Kutubur Rahman told bdnews24.com.
Jasmine, daughter of Abul Kalam Majhi, hailed from Ramdaspur village in Bhola district. She had been working at the house for about one year, Kutubur said.
Though her body was hanging from a ceiling fan, several marks of injury were evident, he said.
The police officer said it seems to be a murder incident but if the girl was raped before killing would be known only after autopsy, he said.
She had love affairs with a youth, who might be responsible for the murder, he suspects.
The police filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, he added.

Bogra, June 17 (bdnews24.com) ? At least five people, including four policemen, have been killed and six policemen injured in a road accident on Bogra-Natore highway at Shjahanpur upazila.
Police said constables Abdur Rauf, 'Aslam', and 'Utpal', and the driver of the police van carrying the 10 police personnel were killed on the spot when the vehicle collided head-on with a Khan Enterprise bus in Jamadar Pukur area around 2:30pm on Friday.
Of the injured, constable Abdur Razzak died at the Bogra Shahid Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, Bogra Sadar Police Station officer in-charge Khalequzzaman told bdnews24.com.
All of the police officials aged 25-30.
Policemen at the hospital burst into tears when the bodies were taken there.
The bus has been seized, though the bus driver and his helper managed to flee, Khalequzzaman said.
