BOA observes Olympic Day Run 2011

Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) observed the Olympic Day Run 2011 simultaneously in the capital, 64 districts and six divisional headquarters across the country amid high enthusiasm on Friday.

In a bid to popularise the Olympic Movement in Bangladesh, BOA took the initiative to hold the programme on a large scale, simultaneously in all the districts and divisional headquarters, according to BOA sources.

Some 5,000 participants including organisers, athletes, players, physically challenged people took part in the Run. After the completion of the Olympic Day Run, a blood donation programme, a sports competition for the orphans, intellectually challenged and street urchins was held at the Olympic Bhaban, Handball and Kabaddi stadium respectively.

The BOA had earlier held a seminar and drawing competition to mark the Olympic Day.

Meanwhile the most attractive programme of the Olympic Day 2011, a photo exhibition and competition named “Traditions of Bangladesh Sports” held at the BOA Bhaban on the day.

Around 500 rare and special photographs of the renowned photographers of the country have been displayed. BOA will award ten photographers at the completion of the exhibition.

Earlier, state minister for youth and sports Md. Ahad Ali Sarker, inaugurated the Olympic Day Run in the capital from Engineers Institute, Ramna and after moving through different parts of the city concluded at the Torch Gate of the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

The Chief of Army Staff and president of BOA General Md Abdul Mubeen presided over the inaugural ceremony.

BOA secretary general Kutubuddin Ahmed, the Chief of Air Staff and president of Bangladesh Hockey Federation Marshal SM Ziaur Rahman, president of Bangladesh Archery Federation Lt.

General Moinul Islam, convener of Olympic Day 2011 Organising Committee and BOA vice-president Sirajul Islam Bachchu, member secretary and deputy secretary general Anisur Rahman Dipu, Country Manager of Coca Cola Far East Ltd.

Debashish Dev, president of Bangladesh Handball Federation and director of Exim Bank Nurul Fazal Bulbul, managing director of Blazer BD Kazi Razib Uddin Ahmed Chapl, and representatives of UCBL, Dhaka Bank, RSRM and Ashiyan City were also present on the occasion.
