Fakhrul: Threats will embolden us
Dhaka, July 9 (bdnews24.com) ? The government will not be able to thwart the ongoing campaign against it through repression and threats, says the BNP acting secretary general.
"The ongoing protests can't be stopped by issuing threats. The dawn of democracy is descending, as the day follows the dark night. So, we'll have to take revenge by ousting this fascist government for its repressive acts," Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Saturday.
He was addressing a rally in front of the party's Naya Paltan headquarters in the city.
The rally was organised as part of the party's countrywide demonstrations in protest against 'police torture' on opposition chief whip Zainul Abdin Farroque during hartal on Wednesday.
Fakhrul said, "The government deliberately caused the brutal police attack on Farroque as he spoke in parliament about corruption of the son of the ruling party chief. The government thinks that no other leader will have the courage to speak in this regard again in the House. That's wrong."
He said the 'threat and torture' would, in fact, reinforce the anti-government campaign.
The BNP leader also urged all to join the hunger strike scheduled to be held on the premises of Engineers Institution, Bangladesh on Wednesday.
"Opposition leader Khaleda Zia will join the programme. Raise your voice against the government," he said.
Party standing committee member M K Anwar said, "Parliament's jurisdiction has been defied by passing the 15th amendment to the constitution. People have rejected it."
"There'll be no election in the country without caretaker government," he warned.
The caretaker government system has been scrapped through the amendment.
