7 'anti-nationals' arrested from city school
Dhaka, July 9 (bdnews24.com) ? Police have arrested seven people from a school in Old Dhaka on the charge of spreading canard against the government.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (Lalbagh zone) A H M Kamruzzaman told bdnews24.com they were arrested from Dhaka Model Pre-Cadet and High School on Saturday.
He said, "Police seized different types of anti-government leaflets from the building at 27/1 Awlad Hossain Lane."
The school, reportedly backed by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, had been distributing leaflets, CDs, cassettes and posters as part of their anti-government campaign, he added.
Officer in-charge of Kotwali Police Station Mohammad Salauddin Khan said, "The school has been shut down."
The arrestees were described as 'suspected Jamaat activists', and identified as Mohammad Alamgir Hossain (headmaster), 53, Mohammad Nure Alam Siddiqui, 53, 'Ismail', 29, Sirajul Islam, 22, Tajul Islam, 35, 'Obaidullah', 23, and Rustam Ali, 23.
Kamruzzaman said, "They were using a Bangladesh flag to mop tables while another flag with stars, moon and Arabic words had been hung with care. This proves their anti-government and anti-state attitude."
He said police also retrieved some lists of anti-government campaigners showing their drive performance in different city areas.
Kamruzzaman said some documents showing the sources of funding and their expenditures were also seized during the drive.
He also said a process was underway to file a case against them in this regard.
Set up in 1990, the Dhaka Model Pre-Cadet and High School has over 200 students.
