9 gold smugglers held in Sylhet
Sylhet, June 20 (bdnews24.com) ? The police have arrested nine members of a gold-smuggling ring in Sylhet.
They were arrested in the early hours of Monday from Naiorpul area of the city, police said.
The arrested are -- Feroz Alam Rubel, 24, Monir Hossain, 27, Taj Uddin Raju, 33, Raja Mia, 22, 'Ali', 35, Khurshed Alam, 41, Mohammad Jamal, 25, 'Majid', 22, and 'Khokan', 30.
A locker for the gold, a microbus and a pick-up van were seized from their possession, Kotwali police chief Khondakar Nowroz Ahmed told bdnews24.com.
Police set up check points at all the spots of the city after a burglary at Nayan Jewelers in the dead of night, at the Shahi Eidgah area of the city, the officer said.
Seven people were held with a locker, used for storing the gold, from a microbus early on Monday.
Later, two more were arrested from a hotel in the Dargah Gate area after information from the seven, he added.
The detainees confessed to being gold smugglers at the station. A case has been lodged against them with Kotwali police, he said.
